I recommend at least one hiding place per foot in length of the enclosure.

Heating

In my opinion, the ideal way of heating a kingsnake enclosure is to use a power plate. This is a small thin square plate, about 25mm thick which is screwed into the top of the vivarium. It does not need to be protected, as there is no way a snake can grip onto it. It is almost invisible to the eye as it simply sits on the ceiling of the vivarium. The only brand available in the UK is HabiStat Reptile Radiator; it is 75 Watts and is sufficient for any vivarium up to 4ft long and possibly larger. It produces no light and therefore in a vivarium you will need a form of lighting as well. A power plate should be used in conjunction with a HabiStat Pulse Proportional Thermostat, which will stop the power reaching the power plate as soon as the temperature goes above the setting, and turn back on as soon as it is too cool. This is one of the most accurate thermostats on the market today.

Ceramic heaters, spot bulbs and heat mats are also ways of heating a vivarium. These all have their advantages and disadvantages, but in my opinion, none quite weigh out to be as good as a power plate.

Lighting

Kingsnakes are primarily nocturnal, meaning they venture out in the dark of night. This is when their main predators are sleeping, and their prey is awake. This is not to say though, that they never see the sun, or any form of lighting for that matter. They will often bask in the sun during the day in the wild, so lighting should be offered.

Having artificial light in a vivarium is aesthetically pleasing to the owner, and is a good addition to a snakes enclosure. They will use this as a photo-period, and their regular time clock will generally adjust to the settings on which you have your light set to.

They do not require any form of special lighting, such as a D3 Ultra-Violet light commonly used for diurnal species. An Arcadia Natural Sunlight Fluorescent Lamp is a good form of lighting. This comes in lengths of 12 up to 48 and I suggest you use the largest size able to fit inside your vivarium.

Humidity

A fairly dry environment should be provided, although raising the humidity when the snake is coming up to a slough may aid in shedding its skin properly.

Feeding

Hatchlings should be offered pinky mice, and as they grow the mice should become larger. An adult kingsnake should be fed on large size mice or small weaner rats. Hatchlings should be fed on a regular basis, every 4-5 days is ideal. Their metabolic rate is very high and as they are growing, they need a lot more food to keep them going. Adult kingsnakes need feeding once every 2 weeks on 2 large mice. Moses The Turtle and My Arrogance

Years ago, I owned a turtle named "Moses". We had a special relationship that scared my family because I would hold Moses right in front of my face and kiss him. They were always afraid Moses would, as most reptiles do, jerk his tongue out and sting me. But he never did! He crawled on my chest and nestled in my neck, feeling safe with me. I loved Moses more than I can describe.

I took him outside with me every day, allowing him to get sunshine and eat bugs as I trimmed my trees and hedges. The back yard was totally fenced in, so I never dreamed he would get out. But the inevitable happened one day. Moses was no where to be found, and I cried for weeks.

About eight months later, I was digging weeds out of the flower bed in the front yard, and my shovel hit something hard. Thinking it a rock, I reached down to get it with my hands and was shocked beyond belief to find dear old Moses under the dirt! How had he survived without me to feed him?

It's amazing how arrogant we humans can be! God created turtles to survive on their own to the ripe old age of 50 or 60 years of age! He "programmed" each species to survive without the help of human beings. Yet I, in my arrogance, thought God needed me to help Him out with His plan!

I learned a lot from Moses after that. I learned how awesome our mutual Creator is! There is nothing that slipped by Him when He was creating all creatures great and small -- no detail He wasn't aware of!

I learned how valuable hibernation is. Just look at the seasons God created: Spring bursts forth with new life only because of the root growth during the "barren" season of Winter.

I learned to hold possessions much looser. Possessions can be lost, or they can die, or they can obstruct my view of God Almighty.

I will always remember Moses and our unique relationship. To this day, I have a wonderful "turtle collection" on my furniture to remind me that in the fairy tale, it was the focused slower creature that won the race. I will always be grateful for the lessons I learned from loving Moses.

In previous articles we explored some of the most commonly known areas in which forensic experts carry out their daily duties. Among these, we mentioned forensic anthropology, forensic pathology, forensic dentistry, forensic nursing and forensic chemistry or toxicology. Forensic Science, however, is a very broad field of study and involve many other disciplines that on a daily basis contribute to solve crimes. Let us now take a brief survey of other, less known aspects of Forensic Science.

Forensic Entomology: Even though mostly disregarded (at best), insects can result highly informative and even critical for certain forensic investigations. Many insects develop through a complex series of stages from egg to adult, but most important is that these life cycles are highly consistent, the different stages occur always in the same way and take the same time to complete. Knowing this, an entomologist (someone who is expert in insect biology) can make a number of useful observations and establish conclusions based on the insect larvae and adults that are present in a corpse. Insect evidence can provide estimations of the time passed since death. It is also possible to determine how long a body has been dead or whether or not a body has been moved after death.

Forensic Botany: Plants or certain vegetal matter can often be very informative about the decaying process of human bodies and their surroundings. Botanists can analyze seeds, pods, roots, leaves, stems, and more to determine when and where a body died, if a body was moved after death. Under certain conditions they can also establish estimates of time since death and location of death estimations based on plant evidence.

Forensic Photography: Although it has changed a lot since the golden age of police TV serials and movies, photography is still a crucial component of forensic work. A forensic photographer must carry out meticulous and comprehensive visual documentation of death scenes, crime scenes and accident scenes. This include the general scenario but also many details that are often disregarded at first glance but can result very important at later stages of the investigation. You may have already picked out a project to do but if not try all the following steps:

1. Originality Is Key!

Your teachers or whoever judges the science fair projects will look for new ideas that are being presented to them. They do not want to see the old stale information from last year. You could definitely think of something that could fix a problem you have in your house or with a product.

2. Prepare

Now that you have the idea it is important to do the project good and you will not do it well if you do not prepare first.

3. Project You

This is one of my biggest pet peeves. The kids come home and hand their parents the paper and expect their mom or dad to give them an idea, get the materials, set up the experiment and do the project. They tell their child what happened and give them the experiment to take to school. No way! This is why you are doing a science project to learn something about science and what better way than to do the experiment yourself.

4. What Are You Doing?

If you have a good idea does your project have clear cut steps to prove your theory? If not you may just be treading water. Keep it simple and understandable and make sure it solves a question or solution.

6. Do You Know It?

When you present the experiment and its outcome to your teacher are you knowledgeable? If they ask a question can you tell them the answer without being goofy? You need to know the information about your project. Your teacher will be impressed and you will actually learn something if you truly know everything about your science experiment. Make sure to do a project that you will be able to understand. If it is really complicated and you still do not understand the concept when you are done then maybe it is too old for you. You need to understand the science level you are trying to accomplish.

7. Answer The Question

Did you answer the question you determined in your hypothesis? If you have shown a science project make sure it works and proves the hypothesis or disproves it.

8. Documentation and Evidence

Give all informational support about the answer you generated in the experiment. You have to prove what you are saying and doing is correct so have back up information to show them.

9. Do Something You Like and Put Yourself Into It

You need to pick a topic that you like and put enough time into the project. If you quickly jot down the science information it will show so pick something you like and will spend time doing and researching to prove a point. Your teacher will see your hard work.

Have you ever noticed that salt is sold in the store when we have snow and ice on the roads? If you have ever wondered about salt and what effect it has on water. If you put salt on the frozen ice in the road it seems to melt so does it keep water from freezing? You have just discovered a science project for the school fair.

Science projects are right under our noses and can be as simple to find as looking at what we do every day in our lives.

This experiment will not cost you anything except a little bit of ordinary table salt.

Get together 3 containers that you can put water into and freeze. They should be plastic that will freeze well. Also you do not want them to be too large. If you can use a sour cream container or a few small plastic cereal bowls that works well.

Fill each container half full with water from the faucet.

In the first bowl put in 2 teaspoons of salt and stir well to dissolve most of the salt
In the second container put in 1 teaspoon of salt and stir to dissolve
In the last cup only have water and no salt.

Make sure the water is room temperature.

Now place them all on a baking sheet and place in the freezer in a stable place that will not tip over.

Leave these there all day or over night. In the morning remove the containers and make a visual observation.

Were all the containers frozen solid? If not were they somewhat frozen? Did any not freeze at all?

Did the amount of salt in the water effect how much the water froze?

Make sure to document your information and take photos. This project is not a demonstration that you can do immediately at a fair but you can show what happened to the salt and water combination in the science project.

For a single or pair of leopard geckos, a vivarium 60cm Length x 30cm Width x 30cm Height will be ample room. If you would like a trio (1 male and 2 females), than a 90cm vivarium would be required with additional hiding places. A vivarium can be made from a number of materials; wooden with melamine coating, glass, plastic and even good quality metal enclosures have been made.

I suggest a wooden vivarium, which is coated with melamine to allow the enclosure to last much longer. If you use regular chipboard or other non-coated woods, the vivarium will not last long with the water spillage and waste products related to keeping any animal. Be sure to have plenty of ventilation holes. Many vivariums are available on the market today already made to suit most reptiles, with ventilation holes and even fittings for the various heat and light appliances.

Substrate & Decor

Leopard Geckos come from dry, arid areas which should be re-created in a captive environment. It is not essential to use natural sands and substrates; newspaper would do the job but it is not aesthetically pleasing. The point is though, that the substrate must be dry. That is not to say though that the gecko cannot get to moist areas, as they will often crawl into slightly moist burrows in the wild. A small moist hide box would be a benefit, especially for when the time comes for the gecko to slough its skin.

A choice of substrate very much depends on what is more important for you. If you want something to look natural, then sand and soils can be the most aesthetically pleasing. These however are dirty and dusty and should be sieved through regularly to remove any waste. If sand is used, calcium based sand is recommended. This dissolves quicker than other sands and will even benefit your gecko with calcium additives when swallowed. Newspaper is cheap and easy to clean, but is hardly a catchy part of an enclosure. Wood chips can be used, but can often be swallowed by accident, causing an impaction in the gut of the gecko.

For a naturalistic environment, rocks, wood and plants can all be used. Although some live plants are safe to use, I suggest fake plants and cacti. Live plants will require more care and many give off toxic fumes. Be careful when placing heavier objects into the enclosure. Leopard geckos like to burrow, and will not hesitate to try and burrow underneath a rock. Make sure these objects are placed directly on the bottom of the enclosure and not on top of the sand, as this will collapse if the gecko decides to burrow under.

If you use any objects which have been outside, wash them thoroughly with hot water and weak disinfectant. It is important to be as clinical as possible and reduce any risk of bringing in infectious diseases or parasites.

Heating & Lighting

The most economical and simple way to add heat and light into your vivarium is to use a single incandescent spot lamp. Usually a 60 Watt bulb will be adequate for smaller vivariums. This should be on for 10-12 hours a day and should be used in conjunction with a Dimming thermostat. During the day time the temperature should be approximately 82F at the cool end, and 88-90F under the spot lamp. Once the light goes out, the temperature should be an overall 74-78F. It is often enough to just let the vivarium go down to room temperature. However, the temperature should be monitored with a thermometer and if it drops below the recommended temperature, some form of background heating will be required.

Background heat can be added with a small heat mat. This should be placed on the back wall of the vivarium and placed in the centre. Depending on how low the temperature drops at night, will depend on the size of heat you require. However, I suggest a 6x11 HabiStat heat mat. This should be enough just to bump the temperature up a few degrees.

Feeding & Drinking

It is important that water is available at all times. Although leopard geckos come from dry, arid areas, they still like to drink. A shallow water dish which is hard to tip over and easy to clean is ideal. It is also an idea to have a bowl which does not have small crevices and cracks in it, which mould can build up in, and small insects can hide in.

Leopard geckos are primarily insectivorous, feeding on insects. However will sometimes feed on small pinky mice and perhaps even eat small amounts of tinned pet food. Mealworms, wax worms, earthworms, crickets and locusts are all suitable prey items. However certain foods should be limited. It is important that the food you give your gecko is as highly nutritious as possible. It would be nearly pointless to feed a starved cricket to your gecko. Therefore, placing food such as potato peel and cabbage into the insects enclosure will benefit the gecko as much as the insects. Gut-Load can also be bought from many retailers. This is a balanced food for insects and should be offered to the insects at least 12 hours before feeding.

Hatchling or juvenile leopard geckos should be fed on a daily basis. They will eat up to around 10 small crickets or similar insects. These insects should be either crickets or locusts, and should be no larger than the width of the geckos mouth. Wax worms can be offered in small quantities once a week, and mealworms can also be offered in small quantities twice a week. A Calcium:Phosphorous supplement should be dusted onto the food every other day. This is to aid in growing a healthy, strong bone structure, particularly in the leg and jaw areas. MediVet Repton, 2:1 Calcium:Phosphorous is a good product to use.

Adults can be fed less regularly, 2 or 3 times a week. They should eat around 8 insects at a time, but obviously these should be larger insects, approximately the size of the leopard gecko head. It is important the food is not too small for the gecko not to be interested, and also important for it not to be too big for it to become hard to swallow. For females in breeding season, calcium supplements should be added to food on every feeding, to aid in the development of the eggs. For males and females out of breeding season, a dusting of supplements once a week will suffice.

One of the more popular exotic pets on the market over the years has been the boa constrictor. Some individuals are not aficionados of reptiles, but those that are enjoy boa constrictors for their grace, beauty, and strength. Snakes are relatively easy to care for, but special handling and maintenance is necessary for your safety as well as theirs.

Boa constrictor is a catchall term for several species of the reptile snake, some of which are endangered and protected. The two most common sub-species you will find readily available in the pet store are the red-tailed boa and the common boa constrictor. The lifespan of the average boa is twenty-five to thirty years, so if considering the animal as a pet you need to remember that it is a very long commitment. The average size for a full grown red-tailed boa constrictor is eight to ten feet long with a weight up to fifty pounds. Though generally docile in temperament, you should respect their strength at all times.

When selecting these pets you should generally opt for a captive bred animal. The snake breeds fairly readily in captivity and these animals are usually more healthy and docile than wild animals. All constrictors are either in the threatened or endangered category in the wild thus giving all the more reason to purchase a bred animal. To house one, glass aquariums with a locking screen top will suffice for small to medium sized animals. Once the snake is larger a secure cage with a minimum floor space of ten square feet will be required. Line the bottom of the cage with paper towels, or a durable indoor/outdoor carpeting. Reptile bark may be used as well, but this is a more expensive way to go. Whichever method you use keep the bottom clean to retain the overall health of the snake.

The temperature of the cage provided to the boa constrictor is critical, so use very accurate thermometers to keep them within the ranges of eighty-two to ninety by day and seventy-eight degrees to eighty-five degrees by night. A slightly warmer "basking spot" of ninety to ninety-five degrees should also be available for the snake. Never allow the snake direct exposure to any heating element including heat rocks, constrictors are very susceptible to burns from such sources.

To feed one provide a separate enclosure other than the regular housing for this purpose. This creates an association with feeding somewhere other than the usual cage reducing the chance of an accidental bite when usually handling the animal. The smaller the snake the more often feedings need to occur. Usually every five to seven days for young snakes, ten to fourteen days for slightly older snakes, and adults needing fed every three to four weeks. Generally mice, rats, and rabbits are the best food and you should ensure the meal is no larger than the widest part of the snake. Once feeding has occurred do not handle the snake for twenty-four hours to ensure proper digestion.

A sturdy water dish is also required within the cage, as the boa will tend to bath during shedding to help with the skin removal. This will also add extra moisture to the air in the cage for the conditions snakes prefer. Another essential accessory is a place to hide, as well as a sturdy branch for crawling. These are two things which the animal needs to feel more comfortable and at home in their enclosure.

Why No One Will Win The Debate On Human Evolution!

Educational disciplines for the most part allow us to pursue evidentiary data before we make conclusions: law, banking and accounting demand that practitioners sign statements to the affect that they have followed generally accepted practices established by their institutions. Arguably, human evolutionary science should be the strictest educational discipline. Is it?

We use fossils, shards, forensics, and some of the best technology available in our quest to unravel the past. For years I have been trying to follow the evidentiary trail of evolutionary science without getting into the sentimentalities of "either or" or "neither nor" groupings. Since lines are already drawn in the sand, if you present factual data showing that the Universe is a giant clock-the most accurate of our known time mechanisms with perfect repetitious motion, negating any possibility of accidental or unintelligent conception, automatically you fit into one category and antagonists go for their swords smashing logic, reason and anything else that crosses their side of the battle line.

The religious community is marginalized for believing that humans were part of an intelligent design, uniquely made--Psalm 139:14. At the same time, sensible discourse on semantics to see if the word "days" in the English language might have had multiple meanings in pre-historic, pre-lunar, and pre-stellar time periods are pounced upon by religious purists--thus widening the chasm between Creationists and Human Evolutionists. I committed the unpardonable sin. I dared to venture on both sides to show that both sides might have wiggle room for better dialogue. What did they do? Both ran and hid like ostriches.

So here I am, on my quest to engage those not afraid of being ostracised, not afraid to face truth. Here are a few simple questions:

1. We see thousands of pictures of ape-like men. We have no doubt that they existed: evidence confirms such. Ape men with tools? Who said that those are the beings that used the ancient tools we find? Why did those beings put down their tools and keep their fur in wintertime?

2. If we evolved from them, why did some go back? Why did we improve our tools and not our ability to survive the cold?

3. What if there was a catastrophe and survivors had to begin the rebuilding process all over again? Have we yet deciphered all the languages of the survivors--the Caribs and Arawaks? Why do we call their preserved writings "Primitive Art?" Didn't we assume the Rosetta Stone was primitive art also?

4. Could Stonehenge have been carved with primitive tools: could the Olmec heads of Central America? Was the ancient observatory on Greencastle Hill Antigua built before Antigua became a fragmented island mass?

5. Why do drawings of ancient civilizations in India, allow recreated models of Vimana to fly?

6. How many people know that maps of South America exist in China, showing rivers once existed on areas that are now frozen tundra?

7. Were miles of perfectly straight Nazca Lines carved by primates, primitive people or pre-humans?

8. Let's not forget that many records supposedly vanished when the Library of Alexandria burned.

On Thursday November 9th 2006, an article by Jeanna Bryner appeared on Livescience. It began by stating that pre-humans had a varied diet. The next paragraph bothered me: our ancestors ate fruit, grasses and grazing animals. Pre-humans and ancestors are not synonymous. True: our ancestors, our parents and even we, eat fruit, grasses and grazing animals. Does that mean that because pre-humans ate the same things as we do that they were our ancestors? The label "ancestor" means that DNA affirm they are part of our chain genetically, and they are not.

Here is the sort of evidence that throws the discussions into a tailspin. An article in Friday November 10th 2006, Washington Post Online, quoted from Dr. George Weinstock, co-director of a sea urching sequencing project. According to his findings 70% of sea urchin genes have a human counterpart. Fruit flies apparently have 40%. Again I am floored. A statement followed: "Meet our new evolutionary cousin." Question: if a sea urchin with 70% compatible genes is our "new cousin," how is it that someone who has two hands like all of us, two feet like all the rest of us, two eyes, one nose, one head, one tongue---who was born pink like all of us, and whose body adapted to climatic conditions-how is that person a member of another race?

All humans have the same 100% human genes and sequential DNA links to an African-based matriarch. I refer readers to a January 11 1988 Newsweek cover story that navigated the DNA river of human beings. That article provided evidence that evolutionists are searching for, yet we are afraid to utter: all human beings are a unique, interconnected rainbow family. We have the same saliva, the same blood types, the same dung and the same disgusting habits: WE ARE NOT MANY, BUT ONE RACE-ONE DYSFUNCTIONAL FAMILY!

That fact that certain pre-human species changed, does not mean that all pre-humans did the same things? The caterpillar continues to change. If some Apes did change, I have yet to see evidence that all apes changed into higher nouns. We find evidence of sporadic, variable, continuous and calculable changes in living species. I thank heaven I am not chained into an either/or school of thought. I have the liberty of taking evidence from intelligently formed (not random) sites to do my analyses. Science has to rely on faith to fill in missing evidence. However they are not allowed to use that "Faith" word. If they do they will cross the divide and surrender points in favour of an intelligent Creator. However religious people can use that "F" word, and not be damned.

To deduce that humans jumped across the bridge of human evolution from the side of the fiord marked "Ape" and landed on the "Human" side requires FAITH. Since the theory/myth/science--choose one-- of human evolution already reached its conclusion before the evidence is fully evaluated, arguing or debating the issue is futile.

Saturn a planet which Galileo once said was a planet with ears! Saturn can be seen with its ring. Looking at Saturn over time, you can see it in different angles. You can see the moons of Saturn and the amazement is great.

Jupiter is a planet which really looks amazing. You can see the eye storm on Jupiter and also Jupiters moons surrounding Jupiter. As you look at Jupiter over time, you can see the moons in different angles and as same as Jupiter revolving.

Pleiades, also called the Seven Sisters is a great view. When you take a look at the Seven Sisters with the naked eye, you may see seven stars in this group, however, with a telescope, much more can be seen. A sea of stars grouped together is what you can see with a telescope or a good set of binoculars.

The Straight Scoop on Uranium

Blame the scientist who almost discovered uranium on why this atomic element is named after the seventh planet from the sun. Imagine if the sequence below had taken place in any other way. What would we now be calling the yellowcake that powers nuclear reactors across the world? You would be surprised. This is the story behind uraniums name.

The word uranium has a confusing past, but through no fault of its own. Since the beginning of the sixteenth century, in a silver mining town in an area which is now part of the Czech Republic, miners discovered a black mineral they called pechblende. Pitchblende, or uraninite as it is now better known, is a uranium-rich mineral which is also comprised of lead, thorium, radio and rare earths. In the late 19th century, it was from this same northwest Bohemian town where Marie Curie got her pitchblende and isolated radium and polonium from the ore.

European scientists Roentgen, Becquerel, Villard, and others were aggressively experimenting with pitchblende and discovered ionizing radiation, X-rays, beta radiation and gamma rays. Pierre and Marie Curie named the gamma ray phenomenon, attributed to the radium in pitchblende, radioactivity. MIT professor of biology Samuel Prescott, who was closely following Madam Curies research, began testing those gamma rays on food. He discovered the gamma rays destroyed bacteria in food. From Prescotts work, food manufacturers discovered they could extend the shelf life of canned goods. Since then, radiation and radioactivity have become an integral part of both the medical profession and the food industry.

Lets go back about one century. In 1789, Martin Heinrich Klaproth presented his discovery of a strange kind of half metal to Berlins Royal Academy of Sciences. The German chemist had, on the face of it, isolated uranium oxide from pitchblende. Klaproth suggested this new atomic element (number 92 on the periodic chart) be called uran.

Not until 1841 did another European scientist, Eugene-Melchior Peligot, finally isolate uranium as an atomic element. Klaproth was just stabbing in the dark when he tried to identify what uranium was. He failed to explain what uranium was, or even to understand it. Nonetheless, his credibility remained intact as a pioneering scientist. Martin Klaproth was later credited for isolating zirconium, chromium and cerium.

Klaproths naming ceremony for uranium was a political move, moreso than a scientific christening of the 92nd element. It was because of Dr. Bode. His Royal Academy colleague, German astronomer Johann Elert Bode, had been fuming since Englands William Herschel had discovered the seventh planet. Herschel honored King George III by calling this planet, the Georgium Sidus (the Georgian Planet). Bode argued the new planet be renamed to conform to the classically mythological names of the other planets, such as Mercury, Mars, Venus, Jupiter and Saturn. Bode chose Uranus, the Greek name for the earliest supreme god.

The Uranus planetary debate went on for about, and was finally settled in 1850, about the same time that a British firm began using uranium in glass to give it a fluorescent yellow or greenish appearance. The point is this: If Klaproth hadnt contributed to the Uranus-versus-Georgium Sidus debate by naming his strange half metal uran, we might be calling uranium stocks something else.

Little Sea Creature - Big Shock for Darwinists

A recent study funded by the National Science Foundation used over 100 computers to analyse the evolutionary history of the Earth's earliest animals. In the 19th century, Charles Darwin introduced the view that all living organisms form a tree of life from which the various species branch off. Although the tree currently looks more like a bush than a real tree, Darwin's supporters have not completely discarded his basic idea.

Evolutionary biologists had previously speculated that simple creatures should have diverged from the trunk of the tree before the more complex ones. Accordingly, they believed that the sponge was the first animal to branch off.

However, the results of the research, published in the April 10 issue of the British science journal Nature, were a big surprise and disappointment for evolutionists. Casey Dunn, whose research team made the groundbreaking discovery, said according to physorg.com, "This was a complete shocker, so shocking that we initially thought something had gone very wrong."

The results were so shocking that the researchers had to check and re-check them several times before they were willing to believe what they had discovered.

The first animal to branch off was not the sponge but the comb jelly. This is significant since the comb jelly has tissues and a nervous system, which are complex systems thought to have evolved much later. A sponge, by contrast, is a more "primitive" creature, lacking both tissue and a nervous system. Dunn thus suggested that the first animal was more complex than previously believed.

In other words, the results were diametrically opposed to the expectations of scientists supporting the theory of evolution. Kakadu National Park In Australia: How To Avoid The Tourist Crowds

Kakadu National Park in the Northern Territory is without doubt one of the most popular tourist attractions in Australia. It is a must see for anyone travelling to Australia's tropical regions.

Nowhere else in northern Australia will you be able to gain the same appreciation and understanding of tropical habitats, see as much wildlife, learn about Aboriginal culture, see ancient rock art, climb and swim at spectacular waterfalls and, and, and...

Almost 20,000 square kilometres (3.2 million acres) in size - the same size as Denmark or Ireland! - Kakadu National Park is the only one in the world to protect the entire catchment area of a major river system, the South Alligator River.
The habitats range from the high stone plateau to forest woodland, from monsoon rainforest to open savannah-like flood plains dotted with billabongs, from mangrove-fringed estuaries to the coastal beaches of the Arafura Sea.
As a result of the diversity of habitats the park contains over 1000 plant species, a quarter of all the freshwater fish species found in Australia, and over one-third of all the bird species. Add reptiles, mammals, amphibians, and thousands of insect species a reminder that the tropics really are the breeding ground for the whole planet.
Aborigines have lived in Kakadu for at least 25,000 years (perhaps as long as 50,000 years), the longest continuous surviving human culture in the world. The park is one of the few World Heritage sites to be listed for both natural and cultural reasons. Kakadu is a treasure chest of exceptional galleries of Aboriginal art, some dating back to the Ice Age.

But Kakadu's popularity has one draw back: 200,000 visitors a year, all visiting the same attractions at the same time, don't add to the experience of "untouched wilderness"...

If you would like to experience the wonders of Kakadu National Park, but want to escape the tourism circus that surrounds it, follow the tips laid out below:

Choose the right time to visit Kakadu National Park.
It is accepted wisdom that the middle of the dry season, from June to August, is the best time to visit Kakadu. This is the time of the year with the most pleasant temperatures, and by far the most tourists. Avoid the biggest crowds by scheduling your trip earlier or later. It might be a bit warmer in May or September, but heck, that's what the beautiful waterfalls and rock pools are there for.

Choose the right areas within Kakadu National Park.
Most tourists enter Kakadu through the northern entrance, the one closest to Darwin. Be different. Instead of turning left just south of Darwin onto the Arnhem Highway, continue on to Pine Creek, and turn left there. The Kakadu Highway leads to the southern entrance, which is located only 60km from the main highway. Many of Kakadu's most beautiful waterfalls, like Maguk and Gunlom Falls, can easily be reached from there. And many people who choose the northern entrance never make it that far.

Choose the right vehicle for your trip.
Kakadu's network of bitumen and gravel roads is fantastic and well maintained. Still, there are several tracks that are accessible by four wheel drive only. Hiringa four wheel drive vehicle greatly increases your reach within Kakadu National Park, and allows you to leave the other tourists behind.

Do you like camping?
Kakadu offers some of the best camping facilities of all Australian national parks. Therefore the managed camp sites, the ones that offer a generator area and a proper bathroom with hot water, fill up quickly. However, there are many bush camping sites that are well maintained, too. And usually they are only accessible by four wheel drive. See point three, and be willing to rough it a bit. As a reward you will wake up to bird songs rather than your neighbour's blaring stereo.

Do youlike walking?
Kakadu also offers an extensive network of walking tracks. You can choose from short half hour walks, to full day or even over night trips, and everything in between. The longer the walk, the less people you will meet and the more different habitats, flora and wildlife you will see.

To sum it up: to get away from the tourist masses visit Kakadu National Park in the shoulder season, take your four wheel drive to the southern parts of the park, and be willing to exchange ultimate comfort for the ultimate nature experience. You will treasure the memories of your visit for the rest of your life.

Exotic Pets - Making The Right Decision

Most families at some point decide to introduce a pet or animal to their family home at some point in their lives. Although cats, dogs, rabbits, gerbils, fish and other small animals are the most common family pet it is becoming less unusual for families to look at bringing home exotic pets.

Exotic pets may seem more exciting and different however unless your are fully prepared and understand enough about the exotic pets you choose bringing one home could end in disaster.

Generally speaking, the more exotic the pet the more education you will need and it will probably require more expensive housing and food. When you are looking for exotic pets do your research before you shop, you may find you purchase an animal on impulse that you know little about and does not fit your family surroundings.

It is extremely important to do plenty of research on exotic pets before you decide what sort you want. You can find plenty of information on the internet simply type in the animal you are look for and read as much as you can to see if this animal suits you. You can also visit your local library and borrow books on exotic pets.

It may be helpful to visit a few pet shops to seek advise about exotic pets, make sure you are aware of all the special requirements they need.

Things To Ask

What sort of housing do they require, including the size and shape?
What sort of food do they eat and how often should they be fed?
Are they prone to any type of diseases or problems you should look out for?
Do they require any special equipment such as a UV light or heat mat?
How long is their life expectancy?
Do they need any type of vaccinations?
Do you need any sort of licence to own this type of animal?

If you have children it may be worth finding out how much your exotic pet likes to be interacted with. If you have chosen an animal that does not like to be handled will your family be happy with a pet that can only be looked at and not touched?

If you have other pets already you will need to know if the new addition will upset your existing animals and how they will get along. You may need to set up alternative measures if they need to be kept well away from each other.

Buying exotic pets is not as easy as it seems but if you are fully aware of everything that it needs and have prepared a loving home with the correct facilities there is no reason why you should not enjoy having one.

Green Anole Information & Care (Anolis carolinensis)

General Information

Green anoles are the most commonly seen of the anole lizards in captivity. They are regularly exported from Florida and surrounding states. They are cheap to buy, but contradictory to popular belief are actually not ideal for a beginner. Green anole lizards are temperamental to their surroundings, and require the correct temperature, humidity and surroundings to remain healthy. They are a short lived lizard, averaging around 4 years of age in captivity, however have been known to live for up to 10 years. Adult males are larger than females, reaching approximately 20cm, females only 15cm. Many people call these Chameleon Lizards, due to their ability to change colour. However, unlike chameleons they cannot actually change their colour to match their surroundings. They will however, turn a darker green / brown when either stressed or basking. The darker colour will raise their body temperature quicker when basking; once they reach their optimum temperature they will begin to turn green again. Most anole lizards are communal species, living in highly populated areas of perhaps hundreds of individuals. Males are highly aggressive towards each other when confined in a small terrarium with a number of females. However, a larger terrarium with a ratio of 1 male to 5 females is ideal.

Housing

It has been published and said many a time that green anoles can live in a small terrarium with minimal requirements. I must stress that this is far from the truth, and will lead to a short lived, unhappy and unhealthy pet lizard. Although this is a small species of lizard, they are incredibly active and curious creatures. They need to regulate their temperature and have access to UVA and UVB rays normally omitted by the sun. Humidity is another important factor, this will help in the sloughing of their skin and generally aid in the health of the lizard.

It is recommended that one male is kept to a minimum of three females. Alternatively, if you only want two or three animals, then just buy females. Green anoles are a communal species and should be kept in groups. Keeping a single specimen will deprive it of the much needed stimulation offered by the surrounding lizards. An ideal group consists of one male to five females. This size group should be housed in a terrarium L90cm x H90cm x W45cm. The larger the terrarium, the further you will enrich your lizards life. A larger group of two males to 10 females should be kept in a terrarium L120cm x H90cm x W45cm.

Many keepers choose to house their green anoles with other species, such as brown anoles (Anolis sagrei) and numerous day gecko species (Phelsuma sp.). This is not recommended for a number of reasons. Brown anoles for example are more robust than green anoles and will dominate the terrarium. It may not be so obvious, but the brown anoles will predominate the higher grounds of the terrarium, have first place under the basking site and may even push the green anoles aside when feeding. Day geckos can be rather aggressive and may nip the green anoles. A number of geckos are also nocturnal, meaning that at night time these geckos may literally walk all over the sleeping green anoles. This will add much stress to the green anole and should be avoided at all costs. There is one animal however which I feel will add use to a green anole tank; that is an American Green Tree Frog (Hyla cinerea). These are nocturnal frogs which will help clear up any uneaten insects during the night, they cohabitate with green anoles in the wild and require the same temperature and humidity fluctuations.

Green anoles, when kept in an optimum environment will breed readily; and therefore will need a deep substrate which is easy to dig in. Potting soil is ideal and is completely natural. With this substrate, it is also possible to place live plants directly in the substrate rather than placing them in pots within the terrarium. It is important to balance your planting and dcor with space. Green anoles will often like to get out into open space along sticks and branches and onto open leaves to bask and get a good look at their surroundings. However, being able to crawl away into a bush to get cover is also a necessity. Be sure if using live plants not to use anything which is either toxic to eat, or releases toxic fumes. Heating & Lighting

As already mentioned; green anoles are a diurnal species and will bask in the sun. Therefore they need a basking site to reach their optimum temperature, and a light which emits UVA and UVB rays. Ideally, 2 or 3 basking sites should be set up in your enclosure. These should be simply 60W spot bulbs placed approximately 8 away from where the lizard/s will bask. By placing more than one basking site in the enclosure you will allow lizards to choose their favourite spot, and allow several lizards to bask in at the same time, as they would do in the wild. These basking sites should reach approximately 86-94˚F, allowing for a more overall air temperature of 80-84˚F and lower down in the enclosure, a cool area of approximately 74-78˚F.

It is possible to replace the spot bulbs with UV spot bulbs. However, providing several of these is a very expensive on-going cost which is not necessary. Instead, place a UV strip light across the top of the enclosure. This should be as long as your enclosure allows, with a reflector behind it so that UV rays are not aimed in the wrong direction. UV bulbs should be replaced every 6-8 months, regardless of whether or not they are still emitting light.

Do not use heat mats or heat rocks with green anoles. They are completely un-natural and serve no purpose. If extra heat is needed during the night time hours, an infra-red bulb will act perfectly.

Humidity & Water

Coming from Florida and surrounding states, a high humidity range is a must. An ideal range is 60-70%, although fluctuations either way will rarely harm your lizard. This can be achieved in a number of ways.

Firstly, a large water bowl placed as near as possible to a heat source will aid in the overall humidity. One step better is to then add air bubbles, commonly used in aquariums for fish. The bubble effect will continually circulate the water and burst small water vapours into the air. Similarly, a small waterfall will give the same effect.

Offering plants such as bromeliads is another way to increase humidity. These plants hold water within the pockets at the base of the leaves, allowing for more surface area of water to evaporate. They also make a great addition for a display terrarium.

Spraying the terrarium with cool water once a day, preferably in the mid-morning will certainly help the humidity, and at the same time allow the anole lizards to drink the water droplets that gather on any leaves or other surfaces. If you have a larger budget, a timed misting system will be perfect for when you are not around and would like the terrarium sprayed at regular intervals. These are becoming fairly inexpensive and are a perfect addition to a wonderful anole display tank. One word of advise though; direct the spray nozzles away from the front of the terrarium, as the spray will obstruct your view into the terrarium and the glass will need to be cleaned more often.

Food & Feeding

Green anoles are predominantly insectivorous (insect eating). However, I say predominantly because they are also known to eat pollen, nectar and other tasty liquid type fruits. They may not eat a banana for example, but may lick the juices. Try offering your anole some of these tasty fruit options, if it eats it, great.

Offering a variety of insects will stimulate the anoles natural feeding responses and aid in the general health of your animal. As we humans need a balanced and varied diet, so do anole lizards. Do not simply offer the same crickets all the time. Although there is not the best selection of foods available within the UK, there is still enough to satisfy the needs of your anole. Offer a mix between crickets, small locusts, mealworms, wax worms, small earthworms, small cockroaches, flies and even moths, butterflies and spiders you find in your own home. Not only will giving a variety offer a more balanced, nutritious diet, but will also make the anole adapt its hunting methods for each food item. An anole lizard wont have to chase a waxworm, but will run like mad to chase a fly or daddy long legs spider. This will give your anole a chance to exercise and aid in the overall health and longevity of it.

It is important to supplement the food with calcium and mineral dusting powders. This should not be done at every feeding, but at least once every two or three feeds. An ideal dusting powder is Repton, a specially formulated powder for insectivorous lizards. As long as this is combined with the appropriate foods and UV rays your anole should be perfectly healthy.

Monkey Brain Trains Robot For Rehab

Now there is good news if you are paralyzed--a monkey has successfully controlled the walking of a robot with his thoughts. Duke University researchers teamed up with the Japan Science and Technology Agency and accomplished the feat halfway across the world. The monkey walked in North Carolina and the robot walked in Japan.

The monkey Idoya was a rhesus monkey. Rhesus monkeys are small, never weighing more than about 25 pounds. So Idoya walked on a tiny treadmill made specially for the little monkey. The robot in Japan walked synchronized in real time with the monkey. The robot was 5 feet tall and walked on its own treadmill exactly in step with the little monkey thousands of miles away.

Idoya was outfitted with electrodes that read signals from her brain. The brain cells sent motor and sensory signals through the electrodes into the electronic equipment which processed them and instructed the robot how to walk. When you are paralyzed your nervous system is damaged and no longer can carry the signals that originate in the brain and end up commanding the limbs of the body how to move.

But your brain continues to send those messages even when the circuit is cut and those messages can not reach the limbs. Since your brain is still sending those messages, all you need is prosthetic devices to walk and move again. By studying the signals Idoya's brain sent to the electrodes, researchers discovered that neurons in different parts of the brain send signals in different "phases" and frequencies.

And at one point in the experiment, the robot continued walking even after Idoya had stopped walking. So the monkey was thinking about walking more even after having stopped walking. The goal is to build prosthetic devices that can enable a paralyzed person to move. But that goal is not enough. There is a grander dream that goes along with it.

The brain can talk to the machines. The dream is to find out how the machines can respond to the brain. That way the brain could sense the feeling of touch through sensors in the machine. It is a little chilling to see the possibilities of the interaction of machines and the vital organs of people. It definitely seems a little like science fiction, but today it is no more fiction. Today it is becoming a reality.

When you are sealed God will give you power to recover from all sorts of diseases and illnesses. Sometimes you will need the help of physicians and counselors, and even, in a case like this, of engineers. But God will give you the power of recovery, and you will be able to recover against all odds. You will be able to move mountains like genetic predisposition to disease. You can overcome that.

And though you must die at some point you will lengthen your life when you are sealed. You will live a longer and better life today, and you will have the promise of eternal Life when you receive the Seal.

Harvard Biologist Admits - We Know Nothing About Brain Evolution

Science journals have featured countless stories about the evolution of the human brain. Scientists are puzzled since humans have much bigger brains than any other species. Their suggested explanations have often been mutually exclusive. For instance, the old text book explanation relied on eating meat but a few years ago an article in New Scientist, a popular science magazine, suggested that eating starch was the secret of brain growth. But both explanations fail to answer why other meat or starch eating species do not have big brains.

At the recent AAAS (American Association for the Advancement of Science) annual meeting in Boston, Richard Lewontin, a distinguished biology professor at Harvard University, acknowledged that stories about human brain evolution have not been based on facts. Reporting on the meeting for the journal Science, Michael Balter quoted Lewontin as saying, "We are missing the fossil record of human cognition, so we make up stories." The title of Balter's article seems to be an admission of sorts: "How Human Intelligence Evolved--Is It Science or 'Paleofantasy'?"

According to professor Lewontin, it is fantasy. Lewontin suggests that there is much cause for pessimism in the study of human origins. Science reporter James Randerson of Britain's Guardian newspaper was even more brunt, saying, "We know nothing about brain evolution." Randerson went on to summarise Lewontin's reasons for pessimism. "The handful of hominid fossils stretching back 4m years or so" cannot tell us whether any of them were our ancestors. We "do not have the have the faintest idea what the cranial capacity [of a fossil hominid] means". Moreover, we do not even know which hominids walked upright and which did not.

Lewontin is well-known for his outspokenness. In 1997 he wrote in The New York Review of Books that scientists often choose to make up "unsubstantiated just-so stories" because they "have a prior commitment, a commitment to materialism... Moreover, that materialism is an absolute, for we cannot allow a Divine Foot in the door."

Obviously, the scientific community cannot ignore Lewinton's recent conclusions. If the ruling paradigm (naturalism or the view that nature is all there is) leads us into a blind alley, might there be something wrong with it?

Is That True That People Can Trace Their Ancestor Lines Via Ancestor DNA Testing?

Genealogy research has been one upcoming and popular thing when one of the most sought talk show celebrities, Oprah Winfrey announced on her show that DNA testing has managed to track her origin ethnic to a Kpelles tribe located in Liberia.

Then, with all the extensive studies and affordability of genealogical DNA tests like the Genographic Project, annual sales have been increasingly rising where an estimated $60 million was recorded in year 2006.

Then, why people are interested in finding their origin? Is it because they are looking to validate or invalidate their genealogical records? Do they have or suspected any surname change or adoption in the line?

Are they looking to verify the relationships with a family from a region where they believed their family has lived? Or do they believe that they have a common ancestor with another individual or group? Actually all the reasons mentioned are true.

However, the right reasons for the existence of DNA test kits seem rational but whether the $70 to $900 ranging DNA testing provided could pinpoint exactly your ancestor origin is another story.

The two most common tests in genealogy kits examine the paternally inherited Y chromosome (Y-DNA), which is passed down from father to son, and the mtDNA (mitochondrial DNA) that is passed down from mother to child.

Another test links to autosomal DNA, which is inherited from both parents. However, it is most likely that one small part of your family tree can be concluded. Like the mtDNA test, the information only could track you back to only one of your 16 great grandparents.

Referring to the lack of approach in ancestry testing technology, Professor Easteal - a leading molecular geneticist has quickly slammed online and availability of direct-to-customer DNA ancestry testing in the markets now.

He claimed that they only helped to track down human variation that emerged in population over time and not individual ancestry information.

Your DNA information is just many of the tools that we can use to confirm what we know, or find out something new about your ancient heritage.

Breeding Eurasian Sand Boas (Eryx jaculus, Eryx miliaris and Eryx tataricus)

Some people may wonder: of the thousands of snake species that exist in the world, why choose sand boas? Well, I sometimes wonder myself, but I do have a few good reasons. There are several species, subspecies, and varieties of sand boas, each with its own characteristics and personality. They are small, easy to care for, and relatively simple to breed. In fact, it is really too easy to build up a large collection.

Of the numerous species and subspecies that I keep, the European and central Asian sand boas are my special focus. These species occur across huge ranges, making considerable variety even within subspecies inevitable. Every individual sand boa is unique, and can be easily distinguished from others. The variety of patterns fascinates me, and whenever I see a remarkably different-looking sand boa, I attempt to purchase it.

Species

Eryx jaculus

This species is one of my personal favourites. There are three subspecies that occur in southern Europe and into northern Africa. Unfortunately it has not become a popular pet snake, primarily because of trade restrictions this species is listed in CITES Appendix II and Annex A of European legislation. Within the European Union, every Eryx jaculus specimen must have identification papers. This is too much hassle for many breeders, who therefore choose not to keep this species.

Eryx jaculus jaculus, the javelin sand boa, is the most commonly available subspecies. Many captives are of Egyptian and Jordanian bloodlines. This subspecies grows slightly larger and is more heavily built than the other two subspecies. It is also slightly more aggressive, but captive-bred specimens can be tamed and become easy to handle.

Eryx jaculus turcicus, the Turkish sand boa, is predominantly found in Turkey and into Syria. It is smaller than Eryx jaculus jaculus and rarely available in the pet trade. There are a few breeders working with this subspecies, so I hope it will become more common.

Eryx jaculus familiaris, the Bulgarian sand boa, is more slender than the other Eryx jaculus subspecies. It is also the most docile, and has an intricate pattern, making it perhaps the most pet-worthy of the three. Nonetheless, it is very rare in captivity and becoming increasingly scarce in the wild. I am currently working with a group of six specimens, which I hope to reproduce in 2005.

Eryx miliaris

This species is divided into two subspecies: the more commonly seen Eryx miliaris miliaris, the brown Russian sand boa; and Eryx miliaris nogaiorum, the black Russian sand boa. With selective breeding, I hope to produce several variations of these subspecies. My primary project is to produce a captive-bred line of the super black Russian sand boa, a naturally occurring form of Eryx miliaris nogaiorum that is almost completely jet black, with only a few white and grey speckles running down the sides.

Every few years, Russian sand boas of both subspecies are brought into Europe in relatively small numbers. Wild-caught adults do not make the best of pets, and many are rather bland in colour, making them unattractive. This is not likely to become a generally popular pet species, but it will always have its place in the hearts of many enthusiasts. I hope that captive-bred babies will be more desirable, encouraging hobbyists to keep this species.

Eryx tataricus

This species is divided into three subspecies: Eryx tataricus tataricus, which I call the Tartar sand boa; Eryx tataricus speciosus, which I call the spotted sand boa; and Eryx tataricus vittatus, which I do not currently have in my collection.

This is the second largest species of sand boa, with females often reaching lengths of 36 inches (91 cm). I have found this species remarkably easy to maintain. The snakes are generally quite docile and easy to feed. All of mine readily take thawed rodents.

This species is rarely seen in captivity, but because of its attractiveness and good disposition, I am confident that it will become more popular and readily available in the future. Eryx tataricus speciosus is especially attractive, and sought after by many enthusiasts. I have a long waiting list of people who want this subspecies, even at the relatively high prices dictated by short supply and high demand.

Acclimation

It is now illegal to capture wild Eryx jaculus (my group consists of captive-bred individuals from various European breeders), so this section on acclimation to captive conditions refers mainly to Eryx miliaris and Eryx tataricus. There are a number of procedures I follow when dealing with wild-caught snakes. Following is a step-by-step guide to acclimation.

1. The first and foremost thing to deal with is external parasites. Actually, sand boas rarely carry any form of mites or ticks, but a bath and parasite removal should be done as a precaution. There are several products on the market for removing parasites. I prefer one that is often also used for fleas on cats and dogs.

2. My next step is to try to get some food into the snake. The first couple of meals should be approximately two-thirds the girth of the snake if your snake is 3 centimetres in diameter, a rodent with a diameter of 2 centimetres is appropriate. It is important that the first meals stay down with no regurgitation. Once your snake is feeding regularly, you can increase the size of prey to slightly larger than the girth of the boa.

3. When the snakes feeding response is established, treatment for internal parasites should be carried out. I use fenbendazole at 50100 milligrams per kilo of snake body mass.

4. After treating for parasites, it is important to make sure the snakes feeding pattern is reestablished. In most cases, the snake will continue to feed without a problem, but sometimes a specimen will need some help. I use a water-soluble probiotic containing enzymes, vitamins, and minerals, which helps to stimulate a feeding response. This is added to the snakes water every day for about 10 days.

5. Finally, establish a weekly feeding routine. Make sure the snake stays healthy, and develops optimal condition in preparation for breeding.

Brummation

Brummation is torpor or inactivity associated with prolonged periods of low temperature, during which metabolism is reduced, but without true hibernation. This is a most crucial factor in getting these species to breed, and it is important to cool the snakes in a well-thought-out and proper manner.

Before temperatures are reduced, the snakes must be prepared for withstanding several months of low temperatures with no food. Starting in September, females should be fed every 57 days with two rodents of approximately the same girth as the snake. Males do not need as much energy reserve, and can be fed a single prey item every 710 days. At the end of October, feeding should be stopped altogether. During the following 2 weeks, the snake should be digesting its last meal and excreting most of the waste, before temperatures drop below the normal 8688F (3031C).

From mid November to the beginning of December, temperatures should be gradually reduced to 4650F (810C). It is not critical that the temperature decrease by the same amount every day. Begin by simply turning the heat source down and then off. After that, moving the snake onto the floor or into a cooler room may reduce the temperature another few degrees. By the end of November, a permanent place must be prepared where the temperature will stay constant at 4650F (810C). Eryx jaculus will breed after being cooled down to only 5256F (1113C), but Eryx miliaris and Eryx tataricus need the lower temperatures.

I live in southeastern England, where winter temperatures are normally consistently lower than needed for brummation. For me it is easiest to put the snakes in a place with outside temperatures, and use a low heat source to maintain the right temperature. I use a large, display freezer with heat mats controlled by a pulse-proportional thermostat. The sensor is placed in the middle. Since heat rises, the top half of the unit stays warmer than the bottom half, which is useful for wintering several species with different temperature requirements. I place my Eryx jaculus in the top half, and Eryx miliaris and Eryx tataricus in the bottom half. If you live in a warmer climate, a controlled refrigeration system may be necessary. Wine chillers are relatively inexpensive, and work well, but it is important to get one with a built-in thermostat so temperature can be accurately controlled.

At the low temperatures the snakes will be inactive, and should be kept in this state for 3 months. During the first 2 weeks of March, temperatures can be gradually increased back to normal, bringing the snakes out of brummation. Feeding should resume as soon as this 2-week period is over. I feed my females every 45 days for the next month. The first two meals should be small only about half the size of the snakes girth to reduce the chances of regurgitation or vomiting, and to facilitate the build-up of digestive enzymes, which are depleted during brummation.

Mating

Males and females are kept separate and housed individually except for mating. When placed together, as with many other species of boas, the ratio of males to females may be a determining factor in whether breeding is successful. I have three males, and put all of them in with one or sometimes two females. If I had more males, I would put as many as four per female (never more than two females) together in an enclosure.

Males are placed in the females enclosures starting at the end of March, a minimum of 23 days after the snakes have fed. If a snake is refusing food, it is a good idea to try to mate it anyway, as this often triggers a strong feeding response. In fact, males often refuse food after brummation, and do not start feeding again until after mating.

The males should be left with the females for 23 days, and then removed so the females can be fed and allowed to digest for 23 days. Females need to be fed at least once a week (more often is better) to build up energy reserves before they begin fasting during gestation. The males, on the other hand, can be moved directly from one enclosure of females to another, again for 23 days. After a second mating session, however, males should be returned to their own individual enclosures, fed, and allowed to digest for 23 days before being put with females again.

I usually observe copulation between 8 p.m. and 23 a.m. During this time it is important that the snakes be disturbed as little as possible. They are easily startled, and may move away from each other. Even if copulation is not seen, you will often see the male attempting to woo the female following her around the cage with his tongue flicking faster than usual, sensing the pheromones that she secretes. If such behaviour is observed, it is likely that this particular pair will eventually copulate.

These snakes copulate most readily just after shedding. A female that is about to shed may not respond to a male that has just shed and is especially rampant. Mating seems to be most successful when males and females shed at the same time. Males usually stop copulating after only about 3 weeks, so it is important and a little complicated if you have many snakes to coordinate mating and feeding sessions to take full advantage of the short breeding season.

Ovulation and gestation

Ovulation is the release of unfertilized ova from the ovaries into the oviducts. There they will be fertilized by sperm stored from previous copulation. Before ovulation, a female shows a large swelling at the middle of the body, appearing as though she had swallowed a meal twice the normal size. This swelling is usually present for about 1848 hours, and disappears as the ova move along and space out inside the uterus (lower part of the oviduct). Female Eurasian sand boas usually ovulate 13 weeks after mating. If ovulation occurs, it is quite possible that the female is then gravid (containing fertilized eggs); if ovulation does not occur within 3 weeks, one or two males should be placed with her again.

Fertilized eggs develop inside the female for a period of 35 months (usually 4 months). During this period, the gravid female must be able to reach an optimum body temperature of more than 95F (35C). She should be able to bask at temperatures of 98110F (3743C), but must also be able to escape these temperatures when necessary. The enclosure should be large enough to support a thermal gradient, with a cooler end at 7882F (2528C).

Birth

These boas are ovoviviparous. No shells are formed around the eggs, and embryos develop fully while still inside the mother. Babies are born in egg sacs, usually in late June or early July. In the last few days before birth, the swelling of the mother moves toward the tail. Eryx jaculus and Eryx miliaris tend to have 612 babies. Eryx tataricus have been recorded to have more than 30 babies, although this is uncommon usually they have 820 babies.

The babies, in their egg sacs, are deposited directly onto the floor of the enclosure. It is best to use a newspaper substrate at this time. The egg sac should not be cut or removed from the babies. They should be left alone and allowed to break free in their own time. They often sit in the egg sac for several hours, absorbing the remaining yolk. As soon as the babies begin crawling around the enclosure, they should be taken out and housed individually. The care of newborns is identical to that of the adults, although they should be kept on damp substrate until they shed their skins for the first time.

Sexing

Identifying the sexes of these sand boa species is generally easy by simple observation alone. Following are lists of characteristics for distinguishing the sexes in each of the species of Eurasian sand boas.

How To Treat The Common Ailments Of Your Python

Many toying with the idea of owning a pet would like to know what it takes. In other words, most people feel more secure about getting a particular pet if they know at least 80% of what might go wrong and how to prevent it. I think those who want to own a pet python are no exception.

As an owner of a pet, you know top priority goes to the health of your pet. Anyway, most of the pet owners of python don't realize that common python ailments can often be detected and handled at home.

* Vomiting

One of the most common python ailments is vomiting. Do not you handle your pet python just after it has eaten; it may regurgitate. If your pet is under stress due to a feeling of insecurity or if it is infested with internal and or external parasites in its body,
it will tend to bring up its food.

To help avoid vomiting, it's a good idea to hope your pet python REST after a meal. How can you induce it to sleep? Raise the cage temperature to the recommended level for your breed. If you've also set up an ideal basking spot (hot spot), it will lie down there while its food gets digested, and will be much less likely to regurgitate.

* Constipation

If your pet does not defecate as often as it should ... or with great difficulty or if the feces are dry, in all probability your python is constipated.

Low humidity and low temperatures are the most common causes of constipation. You can avoid this by keeping sufficient clean water in the cage. In addition, keep a bowl of WARM water and encourage your python to soak in it.

* Scale Rot

If you notice any chipped or discolored - pink, red or brown - scales in the abdominal region of your python, it is probably suffering from scale rot. This disease could affect just a few scales or a single area or multiple areas.

Sometimes the cause for scale rot can be an internal infection that works its way to the outside and manifests itself as scale rot.

However the most common cause is improper cage hygiene.

If the cage is not regularly cleaned and disinfected, the python may have to bask in its urine and feces for prolonged times and develop scale rot.

A topical application of over the counter triple-antibiotic should clear up this problem. But you will have to transfer the animal to another cage while you THOROUGHLY clean and disinfect its current cage.

While the animal is being treated, do NOT allow it to soak in water. Give it water in a bowl that is just large enough for it to drink from.

Marine Turtles at Coral Bay, Ningaloo Reef

Ningaloo Reef is one of the world's major breeding areas for sea turtles. During the breeding season, between November and February, you can book a tour to see the Green, Loggerhead and Hawksbill turtles (three of the world's seven marine turtle species) come ashore to lay their eggs or to see the hatchlings rushing back to the sea.

The nesting is becoming increasingly popular as a nature-based tourism experience in Coral Bay. Foxes are the single biggest predator of the turtle nests where in some instances they are digging up to 60 percent of the nest to eat the eggs. They also prey on hatchlings as they emerge from the sand.

Baiting is carried out at strategic locations along the coastal strip to protect the major turtle nesting sites. Other threats include over-harvesting of turtles and eggs, predation of hatchlings by birds, feral pigs, dogs and goannas, pollution and changes to important habitats, especially nesting beaches. Four-wheel drives are another threat to the turtles because the tyre grooves they leave behind can create trenches that the hatchlings fall into, preventing them reaching the sea.

The effectiveness of conservation operations can be increased if people are more aware of the impact their activities can have on the turtles.

Turtles need the beach

Marine turtles have lived in the oceans for more than 100 million years. They are an integral part of the traditional culture of many indigenous peoples throughout the world. Even though they spend much of their lives drifting and feeding in the open ocean, the beach is an important nesting habitat for turtles.

Turtles live for years in one place before they are ready to make the long breeding migration of up to 3,000 kilometres from their feeding grounds to nesting beaches. Courtship and mating take place in shallow waters near the nesting beach. Females often mate with more than one male. After mating, the males return to the feeding grounds. They have a large shell called a carapace, four strong, paddle-like flippers and like all reptiles, lungs for breathing air. The characteristic beak-like mouth is used to shear or crush food.

Marine Turtles of the Ningaloo Reef

Turtles tagged in the Ningaloo Reef area, have been recorded off the coast of Java, in Indonesia, within the Gulf of Carpentaria Reef and the Lacepede Islands. It is important for the conservation of marine turtles in the Ningaloo Region to help contribute to marine turtle global conservation. Marine turtles are under immense pressure from a range of activities including illegal trade and harvest; unsustainable harvest; some forms of commercial fishing such as trawling and long-lining; and loss of habitat such as seagrass beds, coral reef ecosystems and intact coastlines. In the Ningaloo regions specifically, marine turtles face the following pressures:

Fox predation
Inappropriate recreational and tourism
Activities such as disturbance and four-wheel driving on nesting beaches
Boat strikes
Specific fishing practices, such as long lining
Pollution from developments both marine and land based

Stress free science projects can be done and you can even have fun. Find a science experiment where you can complete the paperwork within 1 day or at the most two days.

First get the information from the teacher about the points needed for assignment and how the letter grade will be assigned. You want to make sure you comply if they want a poster, demonstration or maybe a graph. Do not just prepare a report you think is good. Your teacher may really want a demonstration from you or may want a colorful graph and if you do not supply this required support document you may lose points and lower your overall grade.

If you can separate the project into sections do that and start with what you can complete now. You may know what type of project you will do and the materials needed so you can go to the store to acquire all the items. Make your title heading on your poster board, type your initial hypothesis. Keeping the project stress free will require you being able to check off the sections you do have complete so you can see the project portions being completed.

As humans we need those successes and if we see the project being completed progressively then we will not become as stressed because we know certain portions are done. Before you start your project get all the supplies you need. Nothing makes it worse to have to go out and get a material only to turn around 4 hours later and need something else.

Set aside time when you do not have places to go and you have quiet so that you can concentrate on the demonstration. Practice your science project in front of your family before you take the assignment to school. Have them quiz you so that you know you are capable of answering any questions.

What is Eublepharis macularius, you ask? It is E2macpets scientific name of Tortoise Supplies Ball Python Supplies Gecko. In captivity, if well taken care of, Leopard Geckos generally live anywhere from 19-22 years, but have been known to reach 27 years of age (longest on record). This is a long lifespan for such a small lizard.

This hydrogen cloud is far enough away that the light from stars in the Milky Way would take 8000 years to reach it. But it will take much longer than 8000 years to reach us. It is moving much more slowly than the speed of light.

The cloud, named Smith's Cloud, is only moving at 150 miles a second. That is pretty slow relative to many other objects in the universe. Nevertheless it is due to hit the Milky Way, and produce some spectacular effects.

It is likely that a number of stars will be formed when Smith's Cloud hits the Milky Way. And they will be massive stars, short lived, which will become supernovae at the end of their lives.

So there will be an Independence Day celebration going off in at least one part of the sky, choreographed at snail's pace, happening over the course of a few million years.

A supernova happens when a star explodes at the end of its life. It becomes quite bright for a short time, outshining all the surrounding stars in its galaxy before the flame dies down and it returns to relative dimness.

Until now, astronomers did not know much about Smith's Cloud. They did not know whether it were a part of the Milky Way or not. But a recent study has clarified everything about the heavenly body.

They pointed the Green Bank Telescope tens of thousands of times at Smith's Cloud, doing a detailed study of the hydrogen in it. And Smith's Cloud is big. It is about 30 times the diameter of the full moon.

The shape of Smith's Cloud is like a comet, and that shows it is coming into contact with the gases of the outer fringe of the Milky Way. Astronomers speculate that the gravity of the Milky Way may be starting to tear apart Smith's Cloud.

But it will hit the Milky Way in millions of years. It is not heading directly for the region of the sun and the planet earth. So it will cause fireworks in the night sky but it will not compromise life on earth.

Alternative 3: Evidence that we Landed on Mars in 1962

"Alternative 3" was the final documentary done by the well respected "Science Report" of Anglia Television in England on April 1st 1977. Within an hour of broadcasting the television station issued a hurried statement stating that the show was a hoax.

We believe that the film is 95% fake but that 5% of it is the most important footage of the 20th Century and totally accurate. That is the NASA footage of people on Mars. We believe that much of the story is also the truth.

Besides filming the show on April 1st, the producers later said that the show was fake. It was quite evident at the end of the movie that something was fake because almost every single person filmed on the show was an actor, not genuine footage. It's a huge let-down when the list of credits role at the end, and a source of major confusion if you are expecting that this whole thing is real. We believe that there is no way that a respected documentary would be explicit that it was produced on April 1st unless it was decided beforehand that that was what they wanted to do.

The people who created this show risked a HUGE amount. They risked that people would never again trust that anything on TV or portrayed by science is the truth. However, we believe that somebody felt that this risk was worth taking because they needed to DISCREDIT THE NASA TAPE OF MARS and the story that went with it, before somebody got it out to the public.

Remember, in the times we are in, "DISCERNMENT " is a KEY ABILITY. Learn to trust your intuition, your gut feelings, your "knowingness" while at the same time being as rational as Sherlock Holmes.

The TV Show "Alternative 3" starts off as an investigation of the "Brain Drain" of England where hundreds of top scientists were leaving the country. Then it turns out that 24 of these scientists just vanished, never to be heard from again.

The name "Alternative 3" comes from the third of three different propositions to save the human species from extinction in the event that humans are wiped off from planet earth by global warming, catastrophes etc.

One man mailed a reel of video tape to an editor at a newspaper whom he was friends with. He then drives to meet with this editor but is killed in a car crash before he gets there. The Science Report TV Show gets hold of the tape but there is only static on the tape.

Later another man who has connections with NASA gives to the Science Report a decoder circuit board from NASA which makes the tape viewable.

What you will see on this tape may do for you what it did for me - my hair stood on end (I believe this is an indication of the truth). It shows the view through a window of some kind of flying vehicle that is flying over the surface of Mars. You see a blue sky and you can hear American and Russians in the background cheer that they have found life on Mars, when they see a small burrowing animal on the ground.

The 'bad guys' have a spiritual law that they have to tell you what is going on, it's just that they don't have to portray the truth in any particular way. Hence there is much truth in many movies. We believe that the movie "Total Recall" has elements of truth in it also. Al Bielek, survivor of the Philadelphia Experiment, said that he remembers being taken to Mars and seeing ancient machines like those on Total Recall, and that these machines were used to recreate an atmosphere there, which had been locked up in the soil.

Interestingly, they mentioned this same theory in Alternative 3 - that the atmosphere had been locked up in the soil.

In our June issue, we told you about the controversial book Alternative 3, by British author Leslie Watkins. In out attempt to find out if the shocking theories in the book were true, we called Avon Books, the American publisher; they said the book was out of print in the states.

We called Penguin Books in London and found that it was listed on their NON-FICTION list.

A senior editor there told us that it was officially classified as FICTION BASED ON FACT.

The author's agent told us it was most definitely fiction.

We wrote to the author himself to try to get the real story, and here is the letter he sent us.

Dear Ms. Dittrich: Thank you for your letter, which reached me today. Naturally, I am delighted by your interest in Alternative 3 and by the fact that you plan to sell it in the Windwords bookstore. I will certainly cooperate in any way I can.

The correct description of Alternative 3 was given to you by the representative from Penguin Books. The book is based on fact, but uses that fact as a launchpad for a HIGH DIVE INTO FICTION. In answer to your specific questions:

1) There is no astronaut named Grodin. 2) There is no Sceptre Television and the reported Benson is also fictional. 3) There is no Dr. Gerstein. 4) Yes, a "documentary" was televised in June 1977 on Anglia Television, which went out to the entire national network in Britain. It was called Alternative 3 and was written by David Ambrose and produced by Christopher Miles (whose names were on the book for contractual reasons).

This original TV version, which I EXPANDED IMMENSELY for the book, was ACTUALLY A HOAX which had been scheduled for transmission on April Fools' Day. Because of certain problems in finding the right network slot, the transmission was delayed. The TV program did cause a tremendous uproar because viewers refused to believe it was fiction.

I initially took the view that the basic premise was so way-out, particularly the way I aimed to present it in the book, that no one would regard it as non-fiction. Immediately after publication, I realized I was totally wrong.

In fact, the amazing mountains of letters from virtually all parts of the world- including vast numbers from highly intelligent people in positions of responsibility-convinced me that I had ACCIDENTALLY trespassed into a range of top-secret truths.

Documentary evidence provided by many of these correspondents decided me to write a serious and COMPLETELY NON-FICTION sequel.

Unfortunately, a chest containing the bulk of the letters was among the items which were mysteriously LOST IN TRANSIT some four years when I moved from London, England, to Sydney, Australia, before I moved on to settle in New Zealand.

For some time after Alternative 3 was originally published, I have reason to suppose that my home telephone was being tapped and my contacts who were experienced in such matters were convinced that certain intelligence agencies considered that I probably knew too much.

So, summing up, the book is FICTION BASED ON FACT. But I now feel that I inadvertently got VERY CLOSE TO A SECRET TRUTH. I hope this is of some help to you and I look forward to hearing from you again.

Now, we're gonna watch this - I'll show you something interesting. OK let's pause. All right, here you go. Look; let's first of all examine the possibility that this was made in Hollywood. If they did make it in Hollywood what would be the point of making it so secret that they had to kill people to keep it from being known? Would they just be doing it to...Why would they keep it a secret, if they made it in Hollywood? They would want everyone to know about it and say - Look we landed on Mars! and they never said that. So what would they want it for as a fake, and how could this professor have recorded it coming from outer space, this tape, if they made it in Hollywood, you see. So let's take their word for it is true. They did kill enough people, they threatened the radio station with closing the license - I mean the television with closing the license of the program, they did fire the people who worked on it. And when the book came out they banned it in America. So knowing all those indicators of a secret conspiracy going on, let's take it as a true tape, but let's analyze it as to what is the real truth.

Look at that porthole they are taking the pictures out of. That is not from an earth type spacecraft. That has a square, curved outer hull surface, and it's very thin as you can see. There's no bolts, you understand, and all that stuff they have on American and Russian spacecrafts. Right, it's very big. You remember the first spaceships that went up. They had little tiny holes in them like that with bolts, like on a ship. That's the first point I want you to see. Now I want you to see something else here. There, you see the curves? Aha, you see this - stand by to scan, that's what he said. Now watch this, watch what happens to the picture. See how slowly it's moving? America and Russia never had any spaceships that are landing on the Moon, landing on any other planet that could slow down and do this. Watch this: the ship is rotating, slowly. Then it stops - Stand by to move on. Watch... see there, now they're back on the landing pattern.

If you analyze this from an aeronautical point of view, you have the ship coming in. All of a sudden it stops, rotates around like this stand by to go-ahead, resume landing. Does that remind you of anything? It reminds you of the stories of "flying saucers". They go, they stop, they move around a little bit, they go. All right. What's that? (I never saw that one before.) OK, we go on with the analysis.

That, see this? Every time they change mode there's interference on the transmission, or they've stopped the transmission and started it again. This interference with any radio transmission frequency is caused by a high intensity electromagnetic field. Also this is in the stories of UFO reports where people's car radios stop and the pilots, their compass goes around like this. There are also stories written how, obviously, UFO's are controlled by high intensity electromagnetic fields. And if you were broadcasting from there back to Earth you would expect the broadcast to be interfered with every time they had to change the controls, altitude or path of the flying saucer, and it does!

And now... watch again. Now look how slowly it's going. Temperature 4 degrees Celsius, 21 km/h wind. 707,7 Mb air pressure. 760 (is normal), no 1013 Mb. This is only 7/10 as much as Earth. OK, next. I want you to observe this place they're coming toward. You didn't notice that, did you? There's a tower, like a control tower. What the cover-up was, what the secret of Alternative 3 was, which is still a secret, is that the Americans did get to Mars in 1962 with a radio and television camera, but they didn't make the ship. That was an alien flying saucer. You wanna see it again? This is the big secret. That's what they didn't want anyone to know. They were just passengers. Imagine it.... on a flying saucer, you see it? The base, the little pads. OK.

So I told you it would be amazing. I took you on a videotrip on a flying saucer as the first thing. That's how they work, just like that, you see it from the inside. How did you like that trip? That was the big secret of Alternative 3. The Americans did not land on Mars. They took as passengers on a flying saucer. All this Alternative 3 stuff was cover.

Besides their playful attitude and often friendly appearance that have made them popular in the human culture, dolphins are considered to be one of the most intelligent animals on earth. They have performed an important role in the human culture, for ancient Greeks they were a good omen for a smooth voyage.

Dolphins are aquatic mammals closely related to whales. They vary in size and are found on shallower seas. These animals are carnivores and their diet consists mostly on fish and squids. Delphinidae is the largest family in Cetacea and since dolphins have evolved about ten million years ago they are relatively recent.

Even though these amazing creatures are trained to be entertainers in numerous aquatic parks around the world they are famous for several debuts in the big screen. Dolphins are trained by militaries for various purposes and are used for animal assisted therapy to help with physiological and neurological problems such as autism, depression and Down syndrome.

Dolphins are wonderful and adorable animals that can be found in our country. Right now there is a company called Ocean Embassy who wants to take advantage of the situation. They are planning on starting to capture dolphins and sell them to aquatic parks and establish in a multimillionaire business, leaving them in captivity.

Sadly the corruption in our country is greater than our sensibility, the situation on dolphins is getting critical, and luckily there are some Panamanians that have created associations to prevent the harm against these adorable creatures. You can help by singing petitions and joining to environmental groups, this cruelty can be stopped is in our hands to take a course of action!

Science Project for Kids To Show Egg Strength

This science project is going to measure the strength of eggs. Eggs are known to be resilient because of their exact shape. The weight is distributed very well around the shell. I will give you several things to test the weight and pressure that an egg shell can absorb.

First get a good dozen eggs. They are only about $1.00 at the store for a dozen. This all depends where you live it could cost more. Test on the egg strength is to see if you can break an egg shell with your hand. Most men will have no doubt they can do this. Make sure the person doing this does not have any jewelry on their hand which includes rings, bracelets and watches.

Place an egg in the middle of the palm of the hand and have the volunteer wrap their fingers around the egg evenly. Do not place this on your hand heel. It goes in the middle or cup of the palm. Now allow them to squeeze the egg. Did it break? If you did this correctly the egg did not break. Why? Due to the shape of the egg and the strength of the shell weight is distributed evenly around the egg and you are squeezing around the full base of the egg.

To test this even further take the egg carton and cut it into 4 sections. Place one egg into each section of the carton holder cardboard and put them in a square about the size of a piece of paper. Take a large book and place it on top of the eggs so that they support the book corners and raises it off the counter or table. You will see the eggs do not break and support the weight of the book. Now add another one on top of the last book. Each time you add a book record if anything is happening with the eggs. Gently keep adding books to determine how much weight the eggs can support. When you find the breaking point remove the books that were support and weigh them to determine how much weight the eggs could handle. This is really incredible.

Be ready with paper towels as this science project will require cleaning up from broken eggs. You may want to do the project next to a sink in the kitchen or an area that does not have carpet so clean up is easy.

What to Look for When Buying a Snake

The first and foremost ingredient to choosing the right snake is the health of the animal. Once that is out the way, a number of other elements come into the equation. Species, age, temperament, colour, pattern, sex, feeding habits and price are all points to think about when looking for a snake.

Health

If you are looking at a snake in a pet shop or other premises, do not look only at the snake. Look inside and outside of the cage for signs of dirty, unhygienic surroundings. No matter how good the shop is, inevitably you will find sloughed skins, feces and other dirty materials in the cage. However, look at the consistency of your findings and excessively dirty surroundings. Overcrowding in tanks should be avoided, and if any dead animals are found in nearby enclosures, stay away from purchasing the animal. Make sure you are buying captive bred stock; wild caught snakes can harbour all sorts of problems and should be avoided by beginners.

Look at the shape of the snake in its resting position. Never buy a snake that you see resting sideways, with its head tilted on the floor. If its mouth is slightly agape, stay away. The spine of the snake should be visible, but not to an excessive measure. It the snake looks skinny, do not buy it, regardless of its feeding habits. Most snakes are generally very consistent when sloughing their skin, so if you see one with bits of skin stuck all over it, be cautious. Loose folds in the skin are apparent in dehydrated snakes, advise the shop owner if you see this in their stock but do NOT purchase the animal.

Never purchase a snake or any other reptile based on your feelings for that animal. Many pet shops have come and gone, the best have always stayed the longest. Neglectful shops soon realise their problems and either fade away, or amend their problems. Buying a snake which has suffered through neglect of the shop will only make the shop continue with their onslaught. However tough it is, please remember, the death of one snake, could potentially save many more.

If you purchase an animal knowing of any possible problems, make sure it is vet checked as soon as possible. Keep the latest fecal sample from the snake and store it in the fridge until the vet can examine it. Never introduce newly acquired snakes into the enclosures of other snakes without having it fully examined. Larger breeders should keep quarantine areas separate from the rest of their collection. Newly acquired snakes should be quarantined for at least 3 months if this is feasible for the breeder.

Age

With snakes, age is often an irrelevant factor in deciding what species you would like. Baby corn snakes are good beginners snakes, and although they can be a little feisty, they calm down quickly and can evolve into lovely animals. One thing to be careful of when purchasing a baby, is to make sure it feeds. If you are unsure of its feeding habits, buy a slightly grown on juvenile. Adult or grown on snakes which have already been handled and are guaranteed feeders, maybe a better choice for the complete novice. However, baby snakes may be more rewarding for anyone to successfully rear.

Price

Always ask yourself; quality or quantity? If something is cheap, there is reasoning behind it. Often, under paying for something you really want may in fact turn out to be something it wasnt bought to be. If you pay too much, you will lose money at the worst, but you can be sure of acquiring something of quality. Do not look to buy any animal which is excessively cheap. Instead, buy the animal you really want to buy, and pay what the animal is worth.

Where to Purchase?

There are a number of places to look when purchasing a snake. I would urge anyone to seek a reputable breeder who has vast experience and a good reputation in the industry. Honesty is the most important factor for any breeder selling animals; do not buy from anyone who you know has misrepresented animals in the past.

Breeders

It is important to realise that a breeder does not have to breed many hundreds of snakes. In fact, some of the best snakes will come from dedicated hobbyists, often only having a pair of a particular species. If you are buying the more commonly seen species, you might want to look for private individuals and seek their advice. With the more expensive snake species and colour morphs, there are fewer breeders to choose from. Always communicate with the breeder before actually purchasing the animal. Ask questions regarding the age, size, lineage, temperament, health and feeding habits of the animal in question. A good breeder will spend time trying to help you, while many other breeders will shrug you off, giving minimal detail and answering only what needs to be answered. As a breeder myself, please be aware that with hundreds of snakes to care for, plus doing various things in your personal life, time can be a virtue. Do not expect an essay when e-mailing a breeder, rather, a polite response with all the necessary information should be expected.

Most breeders will not offer a refund after the sale; this is commonplace when dealing with animals. Unfortunately with animals, mistakes by the buyer can easily be made. It is therefore too risky for the seller to guarantee an animals life, when it is completely out of their hands. However, try and be confident when dealing with a breeder, that they will help you even after the sale. If you run into any problems, they will be there to give you more advice.

Reptile Shows / Expos

Reptile shows offer a great place to meet new people and see many new things, not only with snakes but other reptiles as well. Look for breeders who have spent the money showing off their animals. Well built, classy looking display stands with clean cages and tubs show that the breeder is making an extra effort to sell his or her animals. It shows that the breeders are dedicated, and their effort stems further than just breeding and selling animals. These people are often the ones that will make the effort to help you further if need be after the sale.

If buying a snake from a show, be careful. You must realise that you do not know the people standing in front of you, nor do you know the background behind any of the snakes. Many good breeders will have photo albums of their adult stock on the tables. This is a great bonus; it enables you to view the parents and the lineage of the particular animals you are looking to buy. It also shows that breeders are again, putting more effort into selling their animals and taking pride in their stock.

Avoid any breeders who are unable to answer your questions. Ask for hatch dates, parental information and feeding records. These are minimal details that any good breeder should be able to offer without a problem. Any vendor at the show who is unable to provide this information should be avoided.

Do not feel in a hurry to purchase from the breeders at the table. Ask as many questions as you feel appropriate and take a look at what they have to offer. Ask for the breeders contact details, e-mail, web site and their phone number. If they are unwilling to offer their phone number, try and stay away from them. Not giving their phone number allows them to choose whether or not to answer your e-mails. It is these people which are unlikely to help you after a sale is made.

Newspaper Adverts / Internet Classifieds

This is a way to pick up some fantastic animals, but at the same time the most common way for buyers to be ripped off and often left with unhealthy animals. Many breeders, good and bad will use the internet classifieds. Remember to ask all the necessary questions before buying, ask for photos where possible and expect a reply which is polite and informative. Be careful when viewing photos, that they look normal coloured and not distorted or strange in appearance. Look for other objects in the photo to get an idea of accurate size and colour of the animal. It is commonplace to see people falsely advertising animals, and enhancing images to fit their descriptions better. Try and build a relationship with the seller before you purchase the animal.

Also remember, you get what you pay for. Do not expect to get bargains; you get what you pay for and rarely anything else. Look for the people who are less willing to give you a good deal, these are often the people who are confident in their animals, and confident that another buyer will come along if you do not buy.

Be wary of Free Snakes. It is commonplace to see adverts for Free to Good Home. Ask yourself why, and check to see if the snake is really what you want. Pretend the snake is actually quite expensive; would you still buy it? If not, dont get it.

What Do Anaconda Snakes Eat?

I am almost sure that Anacondas were not of interest to you before you believed in the fine Hollywood hit movie and the story behind Jennifer Lopez last Anaconda encounter. In fact, there are only a handful of people that have ever asked about what do Anaconda snakes eat, neither of these people are within a 10,000 mile ratio of such amazing creatures within their country.

For any situation, entertaining or study reasoning maybe, anacondas are totally apart from all of the other snakes because of the daily habit of hunting, stalking a prey, eating and getting to grow. But very important before we delve into detail and stress this enough: anacondas do not eat people or aren't some sort of compulsive prey eater! That is way too much HBO!

Anaconda snakes are guided by the way their appetite and the way they hunt. The snakes just coil the body of the prey and they squeeze until the last breathe of air is expunged from the animal. They can easily weight over 200 pounds and be longer than 30 feet.

So what do anaconda snakes eat? They eat any animal they can overpower. Usually: fishes, sheep, fully grown deeps and even dogs. Chewing or tearing the flesh of the prey I guess is just another Hollywood effect they can always get away and evolve the emotion of the uncertain. Hollywood is just that great. With a bit of humor, just make sure you focus more on Mr. Lopez than the next bigger snake featured on TV for any of the following sequel of such great movie!
